On Friday, @planetmoney did an episode on libraries in ebooks. I waited on listening, knowing I'd have to take notes and rant about it, because most news coverage is so bad on this issue. Parts are really good. Other parts are... well... Get your popcorn.

Today in (undoubtedly Mennonite) cataloging: entering a woman's name as "Miller, Mary M. Miller Miller" because she was born a Miller and both husbands were also Millers. It's Millers all the way down... #Genealogy #cataloging #mennonites

So there's a particular quirk of English grammar that I've always found quite endearing: the exocentric verb-noun compound agent noun. It appears in a definite, remarkably narrow period - not more than 150, 200 years - before dying out, leaving loads of legacy words in its wake.

Closing a book before it ends is closing a door. If there are people available to help craft a positive reading experience, the kind that makes you feel seen and heard, that pulls you in instead of pushes you out, why not bring them on? Sensitivity reads are tools, not weapons.

1. So today I want to write a thread I've been nervous to write. In January and February, according to CDC data, 42% of ppl who died of Covid were vaccinated. It's possible that in the near future, a MAJORITY of people dying of Covid may be vaccinated.

One of the best things a professor ever did for me was give the class a text she KNEW we would all agree with & get excited by, a very woke feminist angry book about very real issues. Then ask us all to evaluate its biases, methodological flaws, & rhetorical sleights of hand.
