I taught my kids how to ride a bike with a balance bike. I would place them at the top of a grass hill, holding them by the scruff of their shirt, and we would race down, and before crashing I would lift them as they glided over the wreckage. At least I think they were learning.

I never see people talk about Miles Davis's Jack Johnson sessions, but that was the best fusion of jazz and rock, thanks in no small part to young bassist Michael Henderson, who also played for Stevie Wonder.

I am all for having free range kids. But when I was 17, we crossed the border from San Diego to Tijuana to let somebody with a whistle pour copious amounts of tequila down our throats, so I acknowledge the trade-offs.
