Will die on this hill: preseason fitness testing is pointless. Unless your goal is to add tons of unnecessary volume, undue stress, and pre-exhaust your players, these tests tell you nothing (and may increase their risk of strains, injuries in this time).

Most kids have a finite amount of time to perfect skills. So drills are needed. The key is to do drills correctly: 1) No lines 2) Include tactical principles 3) Keep energy high. 4) Teach skills correctly 5) make drills progressively harder Follow up with small-sides game

Hockey Canada completed a study which concluded that 1 quality run practice with many puck touches, game like, decision making, challenging and fun will equal up to eleven "regular" full ice games. Keep that study in mind when designing your practice to maximize development.
