This is a pretty restrictive line: bosses have to extract surplus value from your labor for their own profit, for it to be a “real” union, and volunteer/elected leadership can’t be “bosses.” Which, as a line, means a lot of organized labor is on the outside.
If you follow this logic, nonprofit unions, public sector unions, and unions for union staff aren’t legitimate unions.
A boss is an unelected dictator exploiting workers for personal gain. The NPC is an elected body of unpaid volunteers representing tens of thousands of people who actually pay DSA out of their wages for the privilege of being a member.
