@BlackHC Do you feel like this is different in other research fields? Perhaps it’s a sign that we can’t be looking at ML as a single field anymore and need to just focus on a specific subfield. Like medical researchers have rather niche focus topics, not curing all of cancer.

Everyone who works at a health plan should spend 3 months in the prior authorization call center. Doesn’t matter if you’re in marketing, strategy, or IT. Everyone should understand how painful a process it is.

I think many people don't realize how big the US economy is. Ukraine’s GDP is almost exactly equal to the combined GDP of Connecticut’s Hartford & Fairfield counties. Russia's is equal to the sum of LA county, San Diego county, Orange county, & Santa Clara county in California.

In a week, years happen. Machine Learning has gone through a few of these happening “weeks”. If you leave an undergrad or a masters program with an ML 101 under your belt (many still don’t), you will be thoroughly unprepared for the future. ML 101 should be a high school class.

This is definitely one of the more insightful essays I have read in a long time. It brings together multiple threads that have troubled me about the direction of our culture and our country (U.S. though I suspect broader applicability). I highly recommend the read.
