Food for thought: as a district, school, or an individual, what do you believe (perceptions and experiences) are your strengths and what do you know (data) are your strengths?
You cannot discipline trauma - student behavior is only one indicator of what is happening, its layered, it's emotional, it's experiential, its triggered, its reactionary - student's often only show us what they want to show us.
When it comes to being tough on student behavior, what does it mean to be tough? Who decides what tough consequences look like? Staff or students? Is tough the same for each student? #behaviorflip
What about the language in our schools that comes from adults? A culture of empathy and acceptance requires a culture of kindness and positivity. #EduAR
One of the most important parts of an effective discipline program is patience. Expecting but not getting immediate results leads to frustration and distrust. #Hackingschooldiscipline
Students with a growth mindset are more likely to take responsibility for their actions because they believe in their capacity to learn and do better next time.

We want our students to have a good attitude… to persevere… to work with pride… to overcome adversity… to work well with others… and to strive for excellence.
It starts with us.
"At the end of the day, I would rather assume the best about a student and be proven wrong, than assume the worst and be proven right." - @Jeff_Zoul#EdWriteNow
There’s a difference between “complaining” and identifying challenges. The best teammates are always looking for solutions... and they definitely don’t dwell in negativity.
Students don’t know you care about them because you teach them… or because you’ve told them that you do. They know you care about them when you go out of your way to care about them.
I think the most powerful instructional leadership can be seen in the collaboration of teachers who are motivating each other to raise the bar. Positive peer pressure from colleagues is more meaningful than supervisory pressure from administrators.
When it comes to debating deeply complex issues like student behavior and work completition, we shouldn’t go into those conversations feeling like we have the “right” answers. Come with ideas and an open mind. #edchat#behaviorflip
