I finally got around to write a bash script, that uses feeds from sports.yahoo.com, that keeps me updated on football games in text.
Is it just me, or has all of the new programming languages that have come around in the last 15 years, seems like overkill?
Anything that requires a DPMI, I will reserve for learning the Linux way (unless something like demo programming hits me).
The plan is to program DOS as a hobby, treating it as a 1 MB embedded system. GUI and game construction, will be the focus.
I'm going a little retro with Dosbox. For all of it's limitations, it was great being able to program hardware directly in DOS.
It's been a lazy time period, for learning more Linux. Have to find Mojo, and bootstrap myself.
Ah! The joys of having 2 systems. One for regular use (Linux). The other for gaming (Windows). No hassle of dual booting.
I'm very impressed with the revived system. Eyeballing the Radeon HD 6850, to give it some more power, for modern games.
Just finished installing the new 2 core CPU. Even running a LiveCD, it is fast. WOW! Salivating about 8 core CPU in the future.
The 3rd step will have me use "Unix And Linux System Administration Handbook", fourth edition. Suggested references are very welcome.
My 2nd step is taking me through "Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible", by Blum and Bresnahan. So far a good read and practice.
Started brushing up on the shell, by going through Kochan & Wood's "Unix Shell Program". A classic book.
I've been really working on shell scripting skills. Once realized how to apply those skills to problems, I start to feel very powerful.
From the gist of it, Cloud Computing = handing over your data. To which I say 'NO THANK YOU'. It sounds like more hype than reality.
To my surprise, the AGP HD3850 for the other system, is faster than the XL1800 PCIe. Best video card in my life. To upgrade XL latter. $$$
This will be my first dual core desktop system. Has a radeon XL1800, and 2G system memory. Visited newegg.com. Ram will be 4G.
Donated PC has socket 939. After some research, it can support a dual core Athlon 64 X2. Ebay to the rescue! Scored a 4200+.
Received a nonworking, donated PC. Finally got around to replacing the power supply. It now has a heart beat. AMD Athlon 3500+ chip.
