This is what happens when you don't just let California cities collect property taxes like a normal state.

@mnolangray Calling out every change is also why permits take forever. This is what it should be: "I'm remodeling my kitchen" "OK cool, call the inspector out before you close anything up" "Thanks, I'll start the project right now and call you when I'm ready for inspection!"
@mnolangray Why do you even need permits for non-safety related repairs or remodels? Who cares?
@mnolangray I’d be certain the fees would still be the same even if property taxes were reset.
@mnolangray No, that’s what happens when a city doesn’t care about what anything costs its citizenry.
@mnolangray - Building department fees should be self sustaining for the services rendered and not a form of general revenue - Cities with strong property valuations should only maximize property tax revenue as a last resort, quite possible that them not doing this gave us 13 to begin with.
@mnolangray I did a full gut kitchen remodel on my house back in 2018. The permits cost me about $500, no big deal. About 4 months after completion my town reassessed my house increasing the value by nearly $150k and as a result raised my property tax by about $1800 per year. Never again
@mnolangray We need some Supreme Court cases to renew private property rights in this country.
@mnolangray They collect substantial taxes. What are you talking about?
@mnolangray Our local governments can set their own property tax rates and they still charge unreasonable permitting fees. Don't expect California fees to drop if you allow increases in prop taxes. They'll likely collect both unless the fees are capped.
@mnolangray @ArmandDoma Unfortunately California isn’t alone in this…blue states really are awful re: housing and improvements. We need to do so much better
@mnolangray Its the same way in Oregon and the property tax is insanely high.
@mnolangray California collects plenty of taxes.
@mnolangray There is zero chance any California bureaucracy leaves money on the table. They would collect your increased property tax AND charge for permits.
@mnolangray Permit costs got you down? I'd rather invest in a stable market like UAE's.
@mnolangray everyone charges for permits and it's normal for government services to cost money
@mnolangray NY collects property taxes and charges inane fees
@mnolangray I could never image pulling a permit to do work within my own home.
@mnolangray They’re middle road at a .7% property tax. But it doesn’t matter. Those fees, and property tax itself is theft less the state seize your property by force. Real cute position you have there.
