Was this portrait of John Clayton (1792-1890), long-serving town clerk of Newcastle upon Tyne, shaped by photography? A Pressphotoman piece on Edward Sawyer (1828-1902) and his photo art family business. pressphotoman.com/2024/05/06/pho…

Five years ago, an anonymous Wikipedian made their sole contribution: the claim that Emperor Henry II was also known as St Henry “the Exuberant”. This can now be found in at least 6 books, including three by academics and one by a monk. google.com/search?q=%22he… #medievalTwitter
It's been a while, but we've just published a new podcast! Lisa pieces together the life of Elizabeth Phillipson, witness to the murder and cousin of the victim. A fab listen for true crime enthusiasts and family historians. podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/north…
Something is launching this week🚀🧑🚀🌠 Take a guess of what you think is coming to the cathedral👇
#OTD 1489 Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, was lynched when attempting to collect tax. The mob’s real motive may have been vengeance for his refusal to deploy his troops at the Battle of Bosworth. More on conflicting loyalties by @bosworthbattle bit.ly/1WJhGNG
This is an inaccurate headline that will only fuel community concerns. The decision to cover the memorial was taken by park authorities, not the police. As the paper’s own article makes clear, it is a precaution Royal Parks have taken for a number of different events.

Anyone else use a pressure cooker in the late 70s and felt like they had just assembled a nuclear bomb full of stew? It Fucking terrified me - that wee metal bobble on top hissing like we have 4 minutes to clear the area

The North East of England was once at the forefront of religious writing and art. Read this Penbal post about the discovery of a medieval manuscript in a local flea market: penbal.uk/medieval-docum…

Some will mistakenly think this is part of the act, but no, Boris Johnson is just this incompetent. #LocalElections
@n_docs Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for enlightening me!
Don't you just love those narrative genealogies that say things like, 'John, evidently William's son' without producing a shred of evidence in support of the theory that John was William's son...
Happy Wednesday! ✨ For our next ‘Image of the week’ post we're featuring another historical map from our gallery.🗺️ This comes from a map Abraham Ortelius made in 1573, with input from the Welsh antiquary, Humphrey Lhuyd. ⬇️Find out more online: cumbriacountyhistory.org.uk/gallery/old-ma…
So this is the planned route, with each colour differentiating the day. Day 1: Newburn to Kimblesworth Day 2: Kimblesworth to Shildon Day 3: Shildon to Spennymoor I've added some of the Cat D villages i'll come across on the way, though the route might change with weather etc

@Brodie_Waddell I share your excitement. I discovered (at a legal history conference in Belfast) that I am not a legal historian. I am a social historian of litigants and their witnesses. Better not to tell AALT.
What does it mean when you're more excited about the 'supplication' of Bartholomew Combers, blacksmith, than the grant from 'Elizabeth R' in response? #PowerOfPetitioning
Five years ago, an anonymous Wikipedian made their sole contribution: the claim that Emperor Henry II was also known as St Henry “the Exuberant”. This can now be found in at least 6 books, including three by academics and one by a monk. google.com/search?q=%22he… #medievalTwitter
That the plaintiff can reede and write dutche and can vnderstand a lyttle englishe and she hath seen the pl looke now & then into an englishe book to keep hym busye a lyttle but whether he can reede englishe or but looked into the booke to learne to reed or not she cannot tell
Utterly grotesque and beyond even dark comedy. What are we even doing with this stuff?
