Wheatear ‘A small mainly ground-dwelling bird, usually seen hopping or running. A summer visitor and passage migrant. In the breeding season, wheatear are best looked for on upland suitable habitat, but winters in central Africa’
Pied Wagtail ‘A delightful small, long-tailed and rather sprightly black and white bird. When standing, it frantically wags its tail up and down’
Kingfisher ‘Dazzlingly attractive bird with a dagger-like bill. Vivid electric blue with a quick flight, hovering low over water before diving to catch fish’
Redshank ‘Medium sized wading bird with striking orange or red legs. Has white trailing edge to wing seen in flight. Rather nervous and announces it’s presence with a shrill alarm call’
Wigeon ‘Distinctive, dabbling duck. Sexes differ, with males being colourful and attractive. A classic duck of winter estuaries with an evocative, ‘wheeeoo’ whistling call’

Marsh Harrier ‘Bird of prey typically seen flying low over marsh with wings held in a ‘V’. Unbarred tail with heavy and broad wings, silent in flight except high chatter over it’s nest in spring’
Great Crested Grebe ‘Largest grebe with slim silvery, white neck but broad-based and dagger like bill. Pairs display dances during breeding season by raising up out of water and spreading their chestnut ruff’
Black-headed Gull ‘Small, vocal gull with a dark hood in summer, fading to a black ear spot in winter. Calls strident, shouted and abrupt’
Great Spotted Woodpecker ‘Medium-sized woodpecker, boldly patterned and eye catching black, white and vivid red. Drum is loud and hollow-sounding with a fast rattle’
Teal ‘Small, agile duck often found dabbling in shallow water or wet mud, with a dark head and glossy green panel’
Lapwing ‘Social, mostly dry land wader. Slower flight than other waders but has a distinctive tumbling display flight. Has a slender, upswept black crest.’
Canada Geese ‘Very large, long necked, striking geese; dramatic in large flocks. Make loud, deep, full honks’
Redshank ‘Medium sized, brown, saltmarsh wader. Slim, straight bill with red at the base and bright orange legs. Noisy, active and announces its presence with a shrill alarm call’
