@BaxterWilliams_ I assume the biggest factor would have been tax tables. Top marginal personal tax rates were >90% for parts of that period. Currently the highest personal rate is 37%

"Material interests" really aren't a thing outside of basic survival needs tbh, & even then they're driven by emotional needs, there's no inherent reason to want power/wealth, it's mostly psychological/cultural, the concept of "material interests" is just a desire for objectivity

Ironically valence enhancement technology might be being undersold by those for whom feeling good is the entire point. Imagine the implications of suffering no longer being a meaningful threat, of being able to heal any trauma, surpass any aversion. Suffering is leaded gasoline

Philosophy instructors need to contend with the reality that the lesson far too many of our students take away from philosophy is, in effect, that there simply are no objectively correct answers to the most fundamental questions. A top priority should be nipping this in the bud.
