When underlying businesses are growing, don’t get frustrated with no movement in the stock price. Keep accumulating it. When it moves – it will be quick and lumpy, 5-10 baggers. To benifit this up move, we have to make sure, the allocation is damn big.

Soft assets - Stocks, MFs etc. bring in growth. Hard assets - Land, Real Estate, Gold etc. bring in stability & capital preservation. One needs to decide what % of capital allocation or portfolio to having in both and at what point of time in life.

i) Ability to think for/about a point of time - Easy ii) Ability to think about a period of time - Not so easy but easily doable with a mindset change :) This is what helps in having a long term thinking and understanding compounding in toto.

If new to MF investing, best is to pick up a flexi-cap fund ( say Parag Parikh Flexi Cap, HDFC Flexi cap etc.) with a good track record and stay with it for long. Freedom to reposition without any structural constraints really help these funds to perform well over time.

Investing in SME stocks - Best is to wait say for a year post listing, see half yearly results, listen to some conf calls and then invest in such stocks basis conviction build. It may not be prudent to invest in a jiffy when SME stocks just get listed.

It is super important to buy quality stocks. Companies which have superior management and ability to compound over a period of time. Quality mostly becomes evident in the first few years itself. A strong compounding story over a longer term say 10-15yrs yields great results.

At some point of time in life, downside protection becomes much more important than upside maximisation because you may not want to become more rich but certainly want to ensure that you don't become poor. Revisiting asset allocation with age (or every 5 yrs) is super important.
