Study: a 50% reduction in crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists and a 27% increase in drivers yielding to pedestrians with the right of way, as a result of....paint. Yes, a splash of paint = safer streets for pedestrians. This is the power of visual disruption in slowing down drivers.
@jen_keesmaat I never understood how they switched to yellow for dividing highways but did not do it for pedestrians. Also, can we change crosswalks to red lights? It means stop, yellow does not
@peterburnside @jen_keesmaat All pedestrian crossing lights need to be red/yellow/green. No more "black" phases. Use green until the pedestrian pushes the button, then cycle to red.
@jen_keesmaat Here are the ones in Arizona. Flashing yellow, solid yellow, solid red, flashing red, dark. abc15.com/news/operation…
@peterburnside @jen_keesmaat That works for me. Now we just have to remind pedestrians to actually push the button! So often, it doesn't happen so not even the flashing yellow light turns on.
@peterburnside @jen_keesmaat Many drivers have a Pavlovian reaction to accelerate HARD when they see a yellow light so they can beat the red.
