Up to the mid twentieth century there was a tradition/convention that former Attorneys-General succeeded to the role of Lord Chief Justice. Were it to become the fashion again and following her amazing performances before select committees - SUELLA for LCJ? Need to lie down!

With the announcement that Lord Burnett LCJ is retiring next year does that mean that the 'incomparable' Raab - Justice Secretary and LC - will have a major input into advising HM The King who to replace him with ? God help us all. 😱

Oh joy! The same Dominic Raab who hid from the criminal bar, who promoted the poorly drafted and absurd Bill of Rights and holidayed whilst we abandoned Afghan friends to their fate is back. Our cup overflows!

Only 2 Magistrates Courts in Derbyshire - Derby and Chesterfield. Long distances without transport from outlying areas for witnesses, defendants etc. In the 1970s there were 15 such LOCAL courts. Local justice and solicitors now gone. Thanks to MoJ - we now have a legal desert.

It’s all hands to the pump in the East Midlands. Monday's Nottingham Draft List currently has, for 3 courts: “Recorder to be named”. i.e “We want to staff these courts but haven’t yet identified the part-time judges who can help us.” No surprise, when everyone is so busy.

When will they learn that what you say matters and stupid grandstanding courts disaster ? Braverman speaks to get extreme Tory votes and Indian trade deal collapses. Silly posturing about mini budget and pound crashes. Can they all be so politically inept ? Yes all smugly useless

Reflections after 36 hours. 1. The under 7s were magnificent in their conviction and courage; 2. They were sold down the river; 3. Many more of them will now leave; 4. Those in power politically and judicially over the years knew what would come and did nothing. Result : RIP CJS.

Been trying to decide who has been the most damaging and least well informed Lord Chancellor (Justice Secretary) in my time at the Bar. Whittled it down to 3 : Grayling, Truss and Raab. You decide.Such a shame this great Office has been so demeaned.

[Thread] The Ministry of Justice's offer to the Criminal Bar Association (CBA) of England & Wales. In this thread I outline the complex background & policy. I have concluded the offer on the table is a dud & ought to be rejected. Solicitors should join the bar in taking action.

I wonder how many members of 25 Bedford Row approved of the 'personal' tweet by 3 of them. Not a word about Jo Sidhu in the message or his views as a member of chambers. We had a meeting in which all approved our tweet of rejection of the proposal.

Remember that when criminal legal aid first came in the criminal bar agreed the fees should be 66% of the private market rate to ensure the poorest had equal access to the best. LA fees are now at 20%. Our forbears will be turning in their graves at our weakness.

The action by the criminal bar is trying to preserve the 'precious national asset' described in the Jeffrey Report in 2015. He reported to Lord Chancellor Truss and she and all her successors have ignored it. Without us no prosecutors, defenders or justice - nothing but despair.
