Never ask permission to refactor. Never ask permission to write tests. You do these things because you KNOW they are the best way to go fast. When you ask permission, you are asking someone else to take responsibility for your actions.

Developers do not have to justify testing and refactoring to management; because those disciplines increase efficiency and productivity. Indeed, it is the lack of such disciplines that ought to require justification. I doubt any could truly be found.

Don’t assume you need a big solution just because you have a big problem. Even that big solution will be built one step at a time. Choose a feedback loop that also operates at the scale of those steps.

Doing test-after dev (TAD) should, in theory, be able to provide the same improved design results as TDD. In reality, I've never seen it happen. People don't generally clean up their design because they wrote some tests after. #20YearsTDD (4/20)

I've used test retries as a strategy. It always feels regrettable. Good strategy is to push retryables to a separate suite and treat them as technical debt. engineering.shopify.com/blogs/engineer…

It’s not wrong to go to someone who has sinned against you & directly address the wrongdoing. What’s wrong, & I’m wondering how many times I’ve been there, is growing a deeper & deeper root of resentment because we lack the courage to confront or the self control to do it calmly.
