Octopuses are surprisingly intelligent, and reproduce at 1 year old. If we'd started a breeding program 50 years ago, we probably could've gotten them smarter than dolphins by now. A disappointing failure of the long-term mad science ecosystem.

Stats question: There seems to be a lot of call for replacing p-values with things like the Bayes factor. But to make a decision, I wonder if what you really want is to do a cost-benefit analysis integrated over the posterior distribution... is that ever doable?

@mattyglesias Sorry, 20th and 21st. We should also, incidentally, be more prepared for solar flares. Those also happen every century or two, and a modern one would cripple the electric grid for moths and kill potentially hundreds of millions of people.
