Awesome insight here. Our responsibility while on the field is 1) to make sure everyone goes home safe 2) be in the best position to make the correct call

Exception: If a tackle or challenge for the ball endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality, the player is sent off (red card) for SERIOUS FOUL PLAY wherever the offence occurs on the field of play (including the offender’s penalty area).
Principle: if a player denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO) by committing an offence which was an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball and the referee awards a penalty kick, the player is cautioned (yellow card) for unsporting behaviour.
Before a free kick is taken by Team A, a defender (Team B) deliberately leaves the field of play over the goal line without the referee’s permission to put an attacker (Team A) in an offside position. The attacker then receives the ball directly from the free kick and scores a…
Actually had this almost happen in a u12 game I did a few months ago. None of the parents fessed up to the coaches on who did it so I said if I heard it again the parents would go sit in the cars until after the game was over

The referee awards a free-kick to Brentford for a foul by Hughes on Collins. The whistle was blown before the ball entered the goal, so VAR cannot intervene and the referee’s call stands.
Unfortunately this does meet the requirement for a red card. Normally anything to the face or head is grounds for dismissal. There is usually more tolerance for this at the higher levels though.

Can’t tell from this angle. Is there an angle where we can see where the attacker was at the point the ball was played? The attacker could’ve been in an offside position first then come back. Can’t say with this camera angle.

Another difficult decision here. I think the ref could’ve given a pen without much complaints. To me, looks like the defender stops and tries to pull out of the challenge as the attacker leans into it. Referee has the best angle so I think he’s got this spot on.

Referee was great in this match. These are always hard to do. Skill level isn’t extremely high so they replace technicality with physicality. Well done to the referee for keeping the game in check

As a new football season is upon us, let us remember respect for your local grassroots ref - completely on their own without support. We’ve seen this week what happens without law & order. Same applies on the football field - without it we become morally and sportingly bankrupt.
