The last century in NA can’t be understood without seeing religion as the essence of collective identity. Saint Charles de Foucauld sought to “Gallicize” Maghrebis by converting them to Christianity. These perceived "plots" crystallized national consciousness in the Maghreb.

Among South Tunisian Arabs (=Sunni, Arabized Berbers), being Berber is linked to being Ibadite (considered heretical by some) Local Sufi saints are venerated for fighting the Ibadites, ergo Berbers, in the same way Moroccan saints are venerated for driving away the Portuguese
