Kit, or Christopher Smart, was a poet in the 1700s and has links to Reading through a printing company. This biography on him was published in 1961 and written by Christopher Devlin. Reading Library has both reference and lending copies. #ReadingLocalHistory

Inside this plain green cover is a 4 page leaflet on the history of George Hawkes and Sons, ironmongers at 7 High Street, Reading. Hawkes shop is no more, but the building still exists and is now Perry's (just next to where Oxfam bookshop used to be). #ReadingLocalHistory

Reading Library has posted about this book before, but as today is VJ Day we are highlighting it again in commemoration of those who served, particularly in the Burma campaign, and those from the Royal Berkshire Regiment, who this book honours - John Hill, Slim's Burma Boys.
