For the Ottoman elite, "Turk" was often an insult. They used phrases like "Etrak-i bi-idrak" (ignorant Turks), identifying as "Ottomans" instead. The rise of Turkish nationalism in the 19th century completely flipped the script, elevating the "Turk" into a celebrated identity.
