True freedom in any pursuit comes from deep knowledge. Most information given for the general public is sub-optimal for you.

Although possible, It's hard to be self reflective and work towards true happiness if you're bogged down by day to day needs of life. So use financially independent as leverage. But live a rich life along the journey as well.

Caught myself trying to convince myself that I don't need something and getting affected by it when it didn't happen. To truly observe a desire for what it is, is quite hard in practice.

In unpleasant situations the true cause of negative emotions is your mind, people in your surroundings are just doing what they do, be it good or bad. Trying to change external circumstances will only lead to precarious peace and the way to truly be peaceful is to look within.

Fulfilling your desires doesn't lead to happiness, just temporary pleasure. But the solution isn't to forsake desires, because what you give up violently creates a hold over you. Just observe the desire for what it truly is, and it will not long hold sway over you.
