Thinking about how the stories of repenting invaders (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and maybe-kinda-but-not-really-reformed imperialists (“Navalny”) are seen as purely human, while the stories of those being invaded, oppressed and colonised are inevitably seen as “politics”.
@rynkrynk I haven't seen the movie AQWF but the book really emphasises how bad were those in power during WW1
@rynkrynk Yeah, totally agree, oppressing and resisting evil is seen very differently in the UK, including on WW1 when Germany behaved utterly appallingly and gassed tens of thousands of people out the blue and against treaties with a massive chemical weapons industry UK didn't have
@rynkrynk This tweet hits completely out of target. Don't waste time and energy fighting the wrong battles.
@rynkrynk Do Ukrainian soldiers occuping Donbass qualify as invaders?
@rynkrynk Navalny isn’t outright genocidal. And he frankly is a victim of Putin’s regime. Regardless of his own morality. Sadly that seems to be the best bar we have for now. Even if Russia Balkanizes, the Russian people won’t just disappear. That’s something we need to remember
@rynkrynk "All Quiet" is an anti-militarist story about the experiences of conscripts....
@rynkrynk literally who is saying that besides some out of touch losers at hollywood
