Good start to the day at Gibraltar Point as a drake Garganey was found- last seen flying towards the north end of Tennyson’s Sands. 182nd species of the year for me here. 246 points for @PatchBirding !
The old adage ‘rain brings rares’ strikes again! Plenty to be seen around site today as the rain eased with two year ticks for myself being Whinchat and Black Redstart. 181/244 for @PatchBirding and still some easy birds to come. Race to 200 is on!
A green-winged theme to the day today as working offsite provided my first green-winged orchids before a green-winged teal was found late afternoon at Gib! Thankfully it stuck for me, #178 for the Gib year list @PatchBirding@LWTWildNews
Fairly quiet on site at Gib Point today- two year ticks being Reed Warbler and Tree Pipit. Otherwise the most notable was the ‘local’ Whimbrel which now seems to have paired with a Curlew. How strange…
Ospreys are cracking birds, this one flying west over the west dunes was just the second I’ve seen here at Gibraltar Point this year. A nice opportunity to practice a bit of digiscoping too!
@LWTWildNews
Lovely to guide a walk at Gibraltar Point this morning, with around 25 people turning out in pretty torrid conditions (thank you!!). Species included singing Redstart, 2 Grasshopper Warbler (video), Whimbrel, 15 Avocet and Black-tailed Godwit and an exceptionally brief Cuckoo.
Birding was far from my thoughts this morning but the rain brought a scattering of migrants including a Brambling and this absolute corker of a Hawfinch. Really smart bird, only the second one I’ve seen here at Gibraltar Point this year. @LWTWildNews@Lincsbirding@InstaBirders
Action is slow in the sanctuary at the moment as the weather has dropped cold, however the shorebird team are still seeing territorial battles, scraping and mating going on. With the first clutch last year being on the 23/4, it can’t be long before the first clutch arrives!
A Bonxie flying south and then into the Wash was the highlight of today’s birding at Gibraltar Point but this Sanderling gave it a good run for its money! Strutting with purpose around the tide line as the tide came in. Just starting to hint at moult too, should look smart soon!
Rainy days mean catching up with records, 787 moths of 55 species so far this year. Most recent this rather charming Scorched Carpet- one of the few moths that looks as good, if not better, upside down. No traps in a week or so due to exceptionally high winds, hopefully soon…
I expected a rather bedraggled pair of Cattle Egrets to be my best finds today, hanging on through 40mph winds on the old saltmarsh at Gibraltar Point. Until a male Serin flew south over me on the beach! A torrid day weather wise but 4 new birds take me to 171/228 @PatchBirding
Barn Owls always a treat on the reserve at Gibraltar Point, with point blank views at times. Grasshopper Warbler and Osprey new for the year list today, up to a staggering 167 species. Let’s see what tomorrow brings… @LWTWildNews@Lincsbirding
This Woodlark with @pseudoliam a highlight amongst many birds today at Gibraltar Point, with at least 25 Wheatears around site, Arctic and Black tern south offshore, pair Whimbrel south too and a scattering of Lesser Whitethroats.
165sp and 217 points now @PatchBirding !!
A flurry of new birds for my year list recently with LRP and Jay being seen today at Gibraltar Point taking me to 161 species for the year (and 210 points @PatchBirding )
Found this today after togging this Med Gull last night- green CR, no digits visible. Any ideas on scheme?
The shorebird season is underway!! The first ringed plovers observed scraping today at both Greenshank’s Creek and the Shorebird Sanctuary, with at least 4 actively scraping this afternoon. Birds now hurrying between feeding on the mudflats and protecting territories.
53 ringed plovers amongst some 9000 or so waders around the shorebird sanctuary and mudflats today, an amazing spectacle after the high tide. The birds seem to be getting feisty with each other now as they battle it out for territories.
At the risk of sounding repetitive, the Glossy Ibis hung around at Gib for another day, enduring the 40mph winds like the rest of the locals. It allowed for better views today, given some patience. Some other good birds included Spoonbill, Woodcock, Water Pipit and 2 Med Gulls.
Almost tripped over the Glossy Ibis at Gibraltar Point this evening after it had eluded everyone’s attentions throughout the day. Probably more surprised it decided to stick around!
Year ticked Whitethroat, Redstart and Gannet too. 156sp of 203 points @PatchBirding
Absolutely gutted to miss the Glossy Inis at dinner time but elated to refind it while watching the surge tide at Gibraltar Point this evening!! Circled the floods before heading back into the plantation. This plus 13 Wheatear (inc. a flock of 11) made for a decent day!
Tragically dipped the star bird of the day at Gibraltar Point but still managed a decent day of it. At least 60 hirundines through, Yellow Wag over and four Brambling (2m2f) in the Plantation. Such stunning birds.
Let’s see what tomorrow holds…
