Colloidal random lasers are hard to design and control. Research in @NaturePhysics shows that combining optically controlled micro-heaters with thermophilic particles attracted by them leads to microlasers with programmable and reversible patterns. go.nature.com/3o6McFC

The random laser configures itself by thermophoresis around a heated Janus particle, and only when the cluster is large enough, and light trapping effective enough, lasing action occurs, as measured by the spectral narrowing plotted below.
