I implore educators to look into Predictive Processing, the modern learning theory related to how AI learns. Not only does it provide insight into how individual students learn; it describes what they need to do so.
It could change everything.
My daughter mentioned last year at the end of 6th that she was "not getting fractions" so I bought the fractions book and she completed it over the summer. As a 7th grader, she just took a math test on fractions and she got an A. She is much more confident and capable now and I…

Lately there’s been a lot of talk among educators about Predictive Processing, a new theory about how humans learn related to the way AI learns. The theory suggests that we form mental models from multiple examples and then revise and shape these models based on continuous…

Years ago, I piloted a single-semester “math lab” course designed to get our middle schoolers caught up with the basics, using a self-paced, self-explanatory, example-based curriculum I was creating.
“TWO periods of math a day??” a student protested on day one.
I tried…
Years ago, I filled in for a 6th grade math teacher for three months, covering his five classes per day. Since I wasn’t the “real” teacher, some kids were anticipating three months of nothing but chilling with their friends.
“You better not make us do math!” one threatened.

Always so good to hear! I designed the You Teach You math series to be non-intimidating and self-explanatory, so that all students can get a hold of math for themselves. It still chokes me up when I hear of a student saying "Oh, I can do this!" Thanks for sharing!

I taught Basic Skills math for a year. In one of the rooms on my rounds, there was a student with a 1-to-1 aide. Often during seatwork, she would say “I don’t get it!” and he would say “I don’t think you’re trying to get it.”
At the time, I was inclined to agree with him.

The overload created by transient teacher explanations/narrations as examples are being presented (& copied) is obvious considering the number of resulting misunderstandings (& copying mistakes). The problems of split attention and redundancy are clear from the teacher's side.
