it seems that festivals and other big events have turned into visual art exhibitions. The main focus is on the visuals/animations. Yes, they are incredible, but the music is definitely secondary, the crowd is mostly filming, not dancing. Or am I missing something here?
To be clear, I am not complaining here. I can see why people like it. And at events this size people can barely see the Dj. But i think it could be cool to use technology to build something that adds to the atmosphere on the dance-floor, instead of taking the focus away from it.
@steve_bug Some people are just looking for multi-sensory experiences,I wouldn't judge them for it, + visual artists need to earn a buck also, gives creatives other than DJs / producers a piece of the pie. I'm pretty sure there's still enough sound only venues on the go if you prefer that
@steve_bug We're living in the age of spectacle - the spectacle can either be part of the musical experience, or a distraction. All depends on how it's applied.
@steve_bug When sets have been regurgitated over and over again, lineups are extremely similar every yet, artists use the same sounds over and over again, etc, it gets stale. Promoters need to find new ways to pique the interest of consumers.
@steve_bug Big corporate festivals haven't been about The Music long ago. Celebrity-Djs are certainly not about music either. Luckily there will always be the underground, 'cause we're like roaches, never die, always living. And on that note, let's get back to the program.
@steve_bug So true , it s like “drop and build up and build down etc … everybody mixing the same way with the same technic one a scenic way with fire works.. well it s a show now, and it seems like people want it that way for theirs Instagram account :)
@steve_bug truuuuu, the worst part is the people way up front are the ones filming the most
@steve_bug You are not. This is the sad true. We urgently need to get back to tiny clubs with residents to build back this community better
@steve_bug ThTs why u need to bring it back to the clubs, fk big events that’s for the masses, anyway better listen 1 or 2 guys all night than 20 dudes lineup
@steve_bug This isn't something new, production / visuals has always been a thing. Fantazia Castle Donnington with the infamous Castle and Dragon that overlooked the stage in '92. Part of the whole rave / festival experience but the music MUST always come first !
@steve_bug Completely right… I can’t do those events anymore… I go out to dance… I’ll take a dark dirty warehouse over a fest any day
@steve_bug Na, I think the visual art is a great add on to the music
@steve_bug Ok So I’m Not Just Seeing Things…. #SayingWhatImThinking
@steve_bug A lot of artists feel the same way. Art has become a spectacle commodity. Everyone is happy there are so many visitors, but depth of experience is low. It's a social event. Talking and posting pictures to say that you made the scene.
@steve_bug Time to take it back underground
@steve_bug I much prefer me a dark warehouse with blacklights and occasional green lasers, there's too much over simulation at these festivals nowadays.
@steve_bug I’ve long held a theory or concept for the live music industry. Film the gig, quick edit and make it available to ticket holders within a few hours. Combine that with notices and suppressed data and it’d hopefully reverse the trend you observe. Sasha at Barbican was a…. Contd
@steve_bug You're not missing anything. But the lack of actual dancing has been going on for years 🫨
@steve_bug Don’t forget to mention pre-recorded mixes so that light show can be programmed in advance 🤢 I dislike the “end-show” on massive festivals. Lots of dj’s don’t want to play an end set as they can’t improvise anymore.
@steve_bug @joshbutlermusic It’s almost theatrical rather than a rave…
@steve_bug Yeah...it's shit now...the late 80's / early 90's were a million times better...we lost ourselves into heavy beats and bleeps.
@steve_bug I agree and you get a really good vibe when there's less to look at. Concourse at WHP is a great example of this.
@steve_bug Bring back the bunker mindset. One red lightbulb and the dj
