It is with great sadness and unmeasurable loss that we learned of the death of Sir David Cox. David was a giant of statistics, a mentor to many generations of statisticians and a friend of the BSU regularly attending our Armitage lectures and events.

The approach of clustering patients rather than diseases has led to more nuanced appreciation of what are the most important clusters for health services - eg 18 fold increase in mortality in 18-44 year olds with psychoactive substance misuse, alcoholism and depression..
