Many important aspects of tarrifs are not captured by the std econ model:
1. They're gonna retaliate, it's going to be worse for everyone
2. We will not get some optimal set of smart tariffs. Tariffs will be chosen for political reasons, with many opportunities for corruption
I think the crazy part is that the blue and green lines show people who moved towards Kamala Harris, and the red line is people who moved towards Donald Trump

I get the urge to be angry, but it's probably worth noting that Biden literally walked a picket line and bent over backwards to rescue pensions for unions like Teamsters. It did not help their electoral fortunes at all.
The party is likely to move *right* after this, not left

Another thing to watch for is thermostatic public opinion on immigration. 4 years of Trump brought support to all time highs before cratering - I’m curious how much of a repeat of we see. Mass deportation is popular in theory but I doubt it will be in practice

I am proud to be one of 23 Nobel Laureates in Economics who have co-signed a letter affirming our belief, as economists and as Americans, that Kamala Harris would be a far better steward of America's economy than Donald Trump.

"...amplified a false story claiming that October 13, 2023 was to be a global "day of jihad", a story which motivated a...landlord in Illinois to allegedly attempt murder on a Muslim tenant and stab to death her 6-year-old son." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Loo…
Laura Loomer, who posted last year that 9/11 was an “inside job,” joined former President Trump in New York and Pennsylvania on Wednesday as he commemorated the anniversary of the attacks.

The liberal argument for immigration is that it massively improves the lives of millions of vulnerable people while benefitting native-born citizens too. No personal cosmopolitan urge required - just because the conservative view is all vague feelings doesn't mean ours is too.
