In late 2021, The Guardian asked me and several others what “woke” meant today. This was my take. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
@sunraysunray that seems a set of comments on woke, but not really a definition of woke?
@sunraysunray Big L to be still repping this definition as Ron DeSantis is banning books and shutting down clinics.
@sunraysunray Defining ‘woke’ as a lack of urgency is odd, especially since most Americans, despite nonstop right-wing propaganda, still “say the term means ‘to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices’”: usatoday.com/story/news/pol… via @USATODAY. Let’s build on the win, comrades.
@sunraysunray The Working class is also an identity claim. You seem a little confused…?
@sunraysunray IMO Woke and MAGA are reactions of different cohorts to enormous social progress over last 100 years combined with economic consolidation, globalization, stagnation of the last 50 years
@sunraysunray Re: "a mythically conservative working-class": this begs for qualification so long as voters can hold "conservative" views on social/identity issues and "progressive" views on the economic issues you listed. Anti-woke politics capitalizes on this split.
@sunraysunray Couldn't disagree harder on this
@sunraysunray I would define it as the privileging of identitarian forms of "inequality" and modes political organization over class-based ones. A focus on solving inequalities of "race, gender, sexuality" etc over class-based inequalities.
@sunraysunray This is an invented definition of the writer alone to justify Torylite policies.
@sunraysunray It’s a disappointing definition because it ignores the real danger - right wingers politicizing the word to oppress people (mostly affecting working class and poor people) - instead focusing on a barely existent concern - the word being used to ignore class in favor of identity.
@sunraysunray Moms: I will not take my two-year-old to see Cocaine Bear. The Post: nypost.com/2023/03/07/wok…
@sunraysunray This definition makes conservatives woke. At least add a bit about being ostensibly social justice oriented when doing it.
@sunraysunray How and why did the meaning of " woke " shift? Did this shift have anything to do with resentment against the Black Lives Matter movement?
@sunraysunray No, the first sentence is STILL the definition of woke. The rest is a spineless submission to the right wing forces who have bastardized its meaning to pander to the racist and bigoted elements of their base and donors.
@sunraysunray What's annoying is that we all know what the right means when they say "woke" yet we are pretending we have NO CLUE.
@sunraysunray I mean I like that definition and agree but it's definitely yours & not widely shared.
