What's the #1 skill for a data analyst? Maybe a hot take but it's not a technical skill! IMO, the top skill is to understand business concepts and the problems at hand. That's where the demand for analytics is coming from. It's not coming from a desire to look at pretty charts!

The new skill needed for data analysis… data governance and data regulation knowledge. Just b/c you can access the data doesn’t mean you should. Store it in the wrong place or send to the wrong person and the financial penalty might cost more than your analysis is even worth!

Critical thinking / problem solving Sort of like... give me a butter knife and I'll figure out how to build a house out of it. No matter what tools or programming you know, it's only as good as your ability to apply those tools to hard problems. Be nifty, be creative!

How do you know what's highly valued? Simple, what would help make money, retain money, or save people time (time is money!)? Start with those questions and that mindset, and review your backlog of requests and group into buckets.

As a data analyst and general employee, you want to get noticed, you want your work to shine 🌞 How do you do that? Work on things that people are looking for, that are highly valued. Iterate, get version 0.01 out the door. V1.0 comes later. Work on the things people want!

Resume tip: Many people add an objective statement at the top explaining what they are looking for or want to do. Use a professional summary statement instead summarizing your skills and what you can offer to a company. Entice them to read the rest of your resume!

Data analyst can be such a broad and catch all job title. Look 👀 at the role’s specific responsibilities & requirements. It can involve true data analysis and problem solving, predictions & forecasting, data pipelines & transforms. Ensure the role fits your expectations!

An effective data analyst will be comfortable interacting with stakeholders frequently and getting feedback on scope, requirements, business context, end goal, and final product delivery. You actually end up wearing a lot hats, even have to manage your own projects!
