1) The expression “flaky tests” is evidence of flaky testing. No scientist refers to “flaky experimental results”. Scientists who observe inconsistency don’t dismiss it. They pay closer attention to it, and probe it. They redesign the experiment or put better controls on it.

There's a reason that many people think testing is easy, due to an asymmetry. No one ever fired up a computer and stumbled into creating a slick UI or a sophisticated algorithm, but people stumble into bugs every day. Finding bugs is easy, they think. so testing must be easy.

As a software tester, I create very little test automation that executes test cases with predefined input and asserts predefined expected results. (I do, however, advocate those building the software I test do this.) However, automation plays a big part in much of my work.

Remember, Customers don't want software. They want their problems solved. The problem Ford solves was that people needed a faster and easier way to get from point A to point B. While a faster horse is *one* solution, he came up with another. It worked.

Why "expected results" in software testing are dangerous: confusion between specified (39, 15, 60), anticipated (the kid did something unanticipated) and desired (we want smart kids). If the instruction is to circle the smallest number, to me 1 should be the only number circled.

1) I just had a conversation with Mitsuku, "a record breaking five-time winner of the Loebner Prize Turing Test, [...] the world's best conversational chatbot." Five times? How could this fool anyone ONCE? This is what happens when you don't try to *test* something.
