In "oh, that's a thing now" news, a colleague of mine thought it odd that there was a single "motion detector" in his AirBNB in the bedroom and voila, it's an IP camera connected to the web. (He left at 3am, reported, host is suspended, colleague got refund.)
@textfiles Glad to know my paranoia isn't entirely unjustified. I always do a sweep for suspicious electronics, now I feel less insane for doing so.
@textfiles Hi Jason, we'd like to follow up on this. Can you DM us the email address associated with your colleague's account? Thank you.
@textfiles In an AirBnB as I read this. Now I'm going to be up all night looking for cameras. 😑

@textfiles @chantastique Interesting because I stayed at a BnB and reported an issue with cameras and they did nothing and would not refund us because the homeowner claimed they weren’t there. Apparently you must need photos for proof.
@textfiles @GlytchTech I would have wrote on a paper sign "PayPal $10,000 to [email address] or I'll tell the local authorities" then after receiving the transaction I would still call and report them. Love fucking with terrible people!
@textfiles did this in the US or another country?
@textfiles I have seen those for sale. Built right into those, clocks, picture frames etc. I think a clock would have been a more believable choice.
@textfiles pro-tip: don't keep the sticker on the back that says "THIS MOTION SENSOR IS TOTALLY A DECOY, I'M ACTUALLY A CAMERA". Can't blame them though, @thegrugq doesn't have a blog post about that.
@textfiles @TheJetFiles Currently in our Airbnb checking out this “sensor”.
@textfiles @pimento Assume every unregulated “hotel” always has a camera. Even in the bathroom. Especially the bathroom.
@textfiles A good giveaway for these is the hole in the base of the "detector"-a standard detector just has a sensor and if you see an open space (without a screw) in the front panel of the device assume it is a camera.
@textfiles @oliviasolon This is why I only stay in places run by Luddites. . . Sadly you have to travel door to door to find them.
@textfiles This happened to me at an Airbnb in Houston earlier this year! Ahhh.
@textfiles @KaylaPekkala Does “host is suspended” also mean “host has been charged with a criminal offense”?!
@textfiles @benedictevans Next up will be "AirBnB Host rents units of his rivals and installs cameras while he is staying as a guest"
@textfiles @SwiftOnSecurity There are these things called 'hotels.'
@textfiles @CCriadoPerez @Airbnb do not care about personal safety at all. I stayed in a property where we found a secret basement where 2 men were living, without our knowledge, and with full access to the whole house. I reported it to Airbnb - they did nothing and ignored my requests to follow up
@textfiles @FauxMole There seems to be a proliferation of these nasty little devices turning up recently! At the risk of sounding paranoid, check for them, better to check than be a star in one of the movies created by them! #privacy #TSCM

@textfiles @rms80 Paging @internetofshit I think?
@textfiles @JackPosobiec Miss the old days when you had to build another room just to house the spy cam.
@textfiles @SwiftOnSecurity Could be worse... This was my room in Thailand
