Found two bad database slaves, that were reporting themselves as fine - no wonder it's been intermittent. Shutting them down & rebuilding
Worst thing about intermittent faults is that you're never sure if you've fixed the problem, or if it's just not hit the trigger condition.
Promoting another slave to master, updating appservers now

Database master down. Need to purge 374,000 error reports out of my inbox before I can even start to get things fixed!
Around 45,000 junk emails zapped from the queue. Server config suitable tightened to prevent the bulk of new incoming spam - I <3 Exim :)
If anyone wants me, I'll be taking off and nuking it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure...
