Ohio, with an economy the size of Switzerland, runs just 48 trains a week. Switzerland runs 77,000. Over the next four years, Ohio will spend $2.45 million on trains, against $6.7 billion for roads and highways. Meanwhile, here’s what became of Dayton’s train station:
Yes, only $2.45 million will be allocated for a single station, and there are no plans to improve Amtrak/intercity rail service over the next four years. Follow @AllAboardOhio and register for the 9/18 meeting to give your thoughts about this insanity. rail.ohio.gov/about-ordc/com…

@the_transit_guy Approximately 70% of Switzerland is mountainous, resulting in a majority of the population living on 30% of the land.
@the_transit_guy Yet another superficial comparison! He's got a million of 'em!
@the_transit_guy I will never understand how they don’t see that the 3C+D corridor would do WONDERS to the state

@the_transit_guy Does it matter that Ohio is 45,000 square miles and Switzerland is 15,000?
@the_transit_guy Dayton has been losing population for over 50 years, which is not because of the transportation system. Reinvesting into the train station isn't revitalizing the city.
@the_transit_guy I'd like to visit Ohio as a tourist via Amtrak. The Amtrak Ohio schedule is paltry and the hours are ridiculous.
@the_transit_guy Comparing Ohio to Switzerland doesn’t really work
@the_transit_guy Took a Swiss train once and it was running about 10 minutes late. Conductor kept apologising for the delay and assuring us that the connecting train was being held for us. They take trains and punctuality very seriously in Switzerland!
Cars are now an app, and that changes the transit question. I was on ‘Team Car’ for a long time; trains and transit didn’t make sense for our city patterns. We didn’t build like Europe and can’t magically transform our urban geography. But smart phones changed everything: the last mile is solved by mapping, Uber, e-bike rental, rental car delivery, etc. Being car-free in a sprawling American city used to be impossible; now it’s easy — the car is an app.
@the_transit_guy Tennessee is in a similar situation with economics and rails. Its economy is comparable to Ireland yet its passenger rail system is basically non-existent.
@the_transit_guy The most common argument against this is that Switzerland is more densely populated. My response to that is that it’s proof that you need high density to have a functioning civilization.

@the_transit_guy "Ohio, with an economy the size of Switzerland, runs just 48 trains a week. Switzerland runs 77,000." further proving that GDP is a nonsense number.
@the_transit_guy How much do both countries spend on roads? That'd be interesting. Does Switzerland spend less money on roads while Ohio spends much more? Are there potential savings for the public budget here?
@the_transit_guy You’re not making the point you think you’re making.
@the_transit_guy when will Switzerland wake up ? Ohio is catch22, you need dense, transit served cities so train can take advantage of downtown to downtown. No density no transit, no transit no density. Also Cincinnati, Cleveland much higher crime than Swiss cities
@the_transit_guy Different lifestyles. Most people in ohio own a car vs. Switzerland.
@the_transit_guy This isn’t the argument you think it is. Dayton’s train station would look fine if enough people in Dayton were choosing to use the trains.
@the_transit_guy Trains might be great for commuters, but not for everyone. I live about 30 miles from a midsized city. Once a week, I do my errands. Usually, that means I have around 10 places to stop at, before heading home. Those 10 aren't spaced close to each other, so driving is necessary.
@the_transit_guy Tbf though, Switzerland can run 77k trains because it's frickin rich
@the_transit_guy Must say that I was expecting fewer than 48 trains per week in Ohio to be honest .... 😓
@the_transit_guy America isn't rich until it invests in public goods. yes you have a high GDP, much higher than us here in Europe, but do you know the value we derive from functional public transport, walkable cities, nice parks, etc? priceless, and that doesn't show up in GDP
