I think we should respect the democracy of London. They don't want growth, so the UK government should stop funding it there. British Library, ARIA, Alan Turing Institute all need moving to somewhere like Manchester with spare capacity. Back growth, stop subsidising decline.

A lot of right wing people in Britain will take the big state central planning angle on this -- that the UK government should force London to allow expansion of its airport. I think that's sad. We know markets work better. And markets require losers to be left to lose.
Please explain how the expansion of Heathrow is consistent with the 7th Carbon Budget, without having to make drastic cuts to other sectors from which many more people benefit than the 15% of frequent flyers who take 70%+ of our flights. Growthers never feel the need to address these questions voluntarily, so I’m asking you instead.
@thomasforth Great idea, but please to anywhere but Islington-upon-Irwell.
@thomasforth This is a climate change denier's opinion btw.
@thomasforth It is not the UK funding London. It is London funding the UK.
@thomasforth x.com/brexitdoncnort… Saw this earlier. As you say, if London doesn’t want to grow, spend the money elsewhere. Imagine what the north could do with 10/15% of the money that goes into London.

@thomasforth The world is on fire. But we need more air travel 🤦🏻♂️
@thomasforth Sorry Tom, he’s right. Constant flights over London would be intolerable for millions all the way along the flight path. The choice is not between Heathrow and storming out like Basil Fawlty shouting “well that’s it then, no growth for anyone!” There are other options.
@thomasforth Oh dear Tom you are still stuck in the past - we need to cut aviation not allow it to grow! Unless of course you want to ruin peoples lives nearby and increase GHG emissions?
@thomasforth Heathrow expanision would result in negative real growth, business travel hasnt grown in 15 years, all thats increased is britons leaving these shores to spend elsewhere. Construction capacity would co be better used on projects that create real growth and dont trash the climate.
@thomasforth Isn't the British Library just east of Leeds? Otherwise agree. LBA needs better infrastructure but I do believe that BHX would be a wiser investment (why I support HS2).
@thomasforth Agree with growing Manchester and Leeds. And building HS2 to connect both. Don’t agree with a third runway or why it’s essential for our economic growth when the UK is failing to invest in so many other options that have a far less deleterious effect on our climate goals.
@thomasforth No-one except Heathrow's owners has explained exactly how this 3rd runway will cause any additional growth.
@thomasforth If only there was a reliable hi speed train to the North…
@thomasforth Whilst I hate to say it, the @MayorofLondon is right. It's environmental awful both in and of itself and in encouraging yet more air travel when we should be discouraging it. Furthermore we should be encouraging growth elsewhere, not in London where housing is already expensive.
@thomasforth “They don’t want growth” when its 1 singular transport project that will lock in decades of emissions is crazy
@thomasforth Do you think relocating the Turing would have a tangible effect on London’s growth? Feels like a slightly esoteric list of things to relocate.
@thomasforth We certainly don’t need another airport. If you include Southend we have 6. That should be enough for any city, however growth oriented. Isn’t it all about proportionality?
@thomasforth I’m fine with moving all that to Manchester (toss Newcastle a bone as well), but I am issuing a fatwa against any relocation to Newport given what that did to the ONS
@thomasforth We should definitely start with the airport and make much greater use of Manchester. It should be linked by fast frequent rail to the North, Midlands and Scotland.
@thomasforth Hs2 means Birmingham will be just as close by public transport as Heathrow.. sorted build one there.
@thomasforth How many runways does London really need?
@thomasforth Why on Earth are you stuck in this 1980s model of "growth", based around airports, motorways and urban sprawl? 21st century sustainable development needs to move on.
@thomasforth Maybe move the Bank of England first.
@thomasforth Stick a new runway in Leeds then, near your house.
