Green (2002, 2008) found ‘what’ peer musicians do. The ‘how’ of what they do is within their communication. Music teachers communicate how to do music via their training. Untrained, peer musicians outside school figure it out by talking. #musiceducation #peermusiclearning

UK academics claim a new music curriculum—to be implemented—lacks expert input and a democratic mandate. Current curriculum is expert/peer reviewed for researched justification of worthiness. New one has no references to research-based info. #UKmusiceducation

Bennett (1980) wrote On Becoming A Rock Musician as a participant-researcher. Field work done in the early 1970s. One researcher’s insights and interpretation of “how.” Why not more research on this topic until Green (2002)? 30+ years?! #musiceducation #popularmusiceducation

Outside school, musicians have no pedagogy (Bennett, 1980) to learn how to become rock musicians. Lucy Green (2002, 2008) discovered strategies that popular musicians seem to use consistently. Could the strategies be their pedagogy? How do music learners interact to teach-learn?

Some degree of training is needed for young musicians to learn instruments and sing properly. But, when does improvisation and composition come into play? If students aren’t getting any chance to use their knowledge of music, how will they learn to create music? #musiceducation
