Have you seen the magnificent black mulberry tree in the garden of @KeatsHouse ? It was selected as one of the 70 veteran trees to be part of the @QGCanopy . The tree dates back to the 17th Century and would have been there at the time Keats lived in the house.
A privilege for myself and colleague Alasdair Nicoll to be invited to give the Springett lecture for the Heath and Hampstead Society last night. I've been greatly inspired by the likes of Professor Oliver Rackham and Dr Merlin Sheldrake who have given this talk over the years.
Our first post pandemic guided walk at Hampstead for the Urban Tree Festival. (last one was 2019) Looking at some of our sites most interesting trees, veteran tree management, compaction, invasive pests & diseases, the wider fungal and saproxylic ecology and succession.

2021 has been a cracking year for me regarding all things fungi. Found some amazing species, co-authored a book, gave some online talks & got a microscope to take identification further down the road. A few of my favourite finds from Hampstead, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk & Suffolk

You may have noticed fencing around some of our veteran trees. This is temporary protection from compaction which can cause root damage. During the Coronavirus pandemic, our visitor numbers sharply increased and this caused increased compaction on the Heath. #NationalTreeWeek

'Halo-ing' veteran trees is an important technique to prolong their life. By removing trees and vegetation around them it reduces competition and creates access to more sunlight for photosynthesis to occur. #Nationaltreeweek

The Heath's trees need to be constantly maintained to ensure they are healthy and safe. This includes pruning to help them grow well or if they have been damaged by storms. #Nationaltreeweek

The Heath's Tree Team carry out diagnostics on trees to assess their health, including the functional wood and any decay. This can be done by scanning a cross section of the tree using non invasive techniques. #Nationaltreeweek
