I'm so happy to see more and more articles being published open-access ❤️The open sharing of knowledge and (maybe this sounds cheesy but...) communal quest for truth is so powerful. (Also I work for a non-profit with a journal subscription budget of $0 😅)
One of Joe Woodgate's psychedelic heat map videos, showing how a bumblebee gradually optimises its flight path between a hive (bottom) and 5 feeding locations, as revealed by harmonic radar tracking. Published today in @SciReports

In the weeks before cicadas emerge they dig tunnels to the surface but remain 7-8” below ground. They wait until soil at that depth reaches about 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Then they make their way to the surface. Males first, followed by females a few days later.

Amazing article on experimental design in ecology!! As someone who has been dismissed when bringing up the replicates vs subsamples thing in studies I've worked on: even lead researchers can fall into these traps! Great review, even if you (think you) know what you're doing
Using scientific nomenclature is so important, especially when many organisms have multiple common names!
Plus, common names can be confusing in their own right: in the "red banded bumble bee" (Bombus rufocinctus), for example, as not all morphs have red bands🙃

A very important message: honeybees don't need help, but our wild bee species do! Honeybees can very quickly outcompete the wild species.
