Had an insightful discussion on the economy and current affairs with Waleed Saigol. Always a pleasure exchanging perspectives on key issues shaping our future.
The economic narrative in Pakistan has to shift from relief to the masses to enriching the masses. There are fiscal limits to how much relief can be doled out. There are no limits to how much we can grow. China is a case in point. Bold reforms are the only way forward.
Great public awareness campaign by @geonews_urdu on the distortions in the Pakistani economy and urgent need for reforms. The public at large need to understand why things are they way they are and the path ahead @MuaazAhsanGeo#Pakistan#IMF
The next IMF program will be tough and it needs to be tough. Many people in Pakistan view the program with scepticism and mistrust. This is wrong! Greece is a great example -follow the program in letter and spirit, reform diligently and see how things improve
Since 1st Jan 2023:
the PSX has returned 73.7%
the USD has returned 23%
the average 3 month t-bill has returned 21.2%
And yet some would be “experts” would have you believe that people have lost faith in Pakistan. The numbers certainly show otherwise.
Self proclaimed economic experts continue bashing the country everyday. Were wrong about Pakistan defaulting and are wrong in their scepticism of the current government’s efforts to reform the economy. A whole cabal of people are about to look incredibly daft once again!
The IMF is not a body that undertakes audits of electoral results. Nor is it within its purview to prescribe solutions to electoral disputes. Pakistan has approx 240 million people - their lives depend on its economy. Keep this in mind whilst coming up with political strategies
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was season of light, it was season of darkness, it was spring of hope, it was the winter of despair عید مبارک
Urgent reforms are the only way ahead. Same old ways will not work - subsidies, overtaxing some and not taxing others, deposits from friendly countries etc @timesofindia#Pakistan#PakistanEconomy
Food inflation is 45%. The Afghan border is wide open and aiding smuggling, terrorism and outflow of physical dollars. The Indian border is firmly shut and our market is closed to cheaper commodities from next door. Surely this isn’t wise?
Pk is in a fiscal mess @MiftahIsmail wanted to tax retailers Rs 3k, 5k or 10k per month, depending on their electricity bill. This would raise approx Rs 40 billion/year. Retailers refused and the GOP buckled. They actually refused to pay a few thousand Rs per month. Pathetic!
All Pakistanis should pay taxes if their income is above a certain threshold. Agriculture, real estate and retail sectors can no longer be given a free ride. Equitable taxation for all. Retweet if you agree!
In a nonpartisan effort, I have been talking to friends & colleagues about the current economic, political and social crisis of Pakistan which are now striking at the core foundations of the state and the society. 1/5
