Happy to announce a new volume in the Bloomsbury series “Advances in Experimental Philosophy”: Lying. It will mainly about (experimental work on) the concept of lying, but also about related concepts and non-conceptual issues. Hopefully out 2024. Table of contents below.

I would put this slightly differently. We take manipulatability of psychological constructs for granted, when it is often at best difficult. We should invest more in carefully evaluating the psychometrics of manipulations than of scales, not much less, as I think we currently do.
Priming made questions that were seemingly impossible to study in the lab appear within reach of psychologists. Little did we know then :).
This is a great point, and what IMHO explains the immense allure of priming in its heyday: It gave psychologists the "ability" to causally manipulate constructs that would be otherwise very hard to move around (culture, thinking style, subjective age...).
I would put this slightly differently. We take manipulatability of psychological constructs for granted, when it is often at best difficult. We should invest more in carefully evaluating the psychometrics of manipulations than of scales, not much less, as I think we currently do.
New paper by @sami_r_yousif and Sam Clarke on size adaptation: "we argue that while there is evidence to license the claim that size adaptation is genuine, size adaptation is a puzzling and poorly understood phenomenon." Available here: philpapers.org/rec/YOUSAD-4
New paper alert! 🚨 Late to sharing this, but here's a short review of a decade of work with @GCsibra on how infants represent giving, and why it matters (for event cognition and the origins of the relational mind). Thread below! 🧵👇 t.ly/S6cLw 1/15
Excellent paper on the late 17th century / 18th century notion of 'experimental philosophy' and its relation to 'modern science' as we know and practice it, given to my by @thepalmerworm philarchive.org/archive/ANSEME :thread:
@matterspattern1 @thepalmerworm Both the Scholastic Tradition and the Enlightenment Tradition underlying the American Revolution make claims that are denied by the Subjective, Psychologism of mid-Victorian Liberalism -- yes. But to dismiss them tout court is just taking sides with one school.
New on the X-Phi Blog: »Teaching Experimental Philosophy to Beginners (Part 1)«. In a hands-on approach, our students made first contact with x-phi by replicating a study from Knobe (2003). #xphi #experimentalphilosophy #philosophy #teaching #replication xphi.net/2024/04/29/tea…
@xphilosopher Another one, eh? How many’s that so far? (I didn’t find the expected correlation on dilemmas that don’t explicitly quantify the utilitarian tradeoff — e.g., five versus one as in the trolley problem. I also detected 0/10 reflection test priming effects: doi.org/10.31234/osf.i…)
@xphilosopher I’ll be curious if the journal that published Paxton, Ungar, & Greene (2012) would agree to send this latest paper to reviewers. (They desk rejected my manuscript, but my paper was more of a conceptual replication attempt than this more direct replication attempt.)
@OlegUrminsky to do that, one ought to test measurement invariance of constructs across conditions, which is (sadly) not a practice at all across social-behaviral sciences
@xphilosopher Oh ok thanks for the correction. My mistake. Lesson: read the paper first. I’ll delete the other post but will leave this one as a testimony of the danger of a too quick reply!
@xphilosopher Also does not have much to do with manipulability.
@xphilosopher Meh. There might some correlation looking at the regression line, but the power of the test might be too small. Also it might be helpful to disentangle men and women.
@xphilosopher I agree with that as well. I think taking the psychometrics of manipulations seriously would also have the benefit of mapping out what kinds of psychological constructs are highly stable (i.e., not readily manipulatable) which is an important aspect of understanding constructs.
I would put this slightly differently. We take manipulatability of psychological constructs for granted, when it is often at best difficult. We should invest more in carefully evaluating the psychometrics of manipulations than of scales, not much less, as I think we currently do.
At this point, it’s looking like there’s a very general pattern: Attempts to push people’s philosophical intuitions around with manipulations of their mode of thinking tend not to work We need to be thinking about this more general pattern and not just each individual instance
Idea: write a paper about the Ship of Theseus and submit it to a tough journal. Make endless edits in response to Reviewer 2 comments until not a word of the original remains. Get it accepted. Then, submit new version of paper identical to first draft to separate journal.
"Dear Dr. Dranseika, Based on the reviewers' recommendations, we are delighted to accept your paper Two Ships of Theseus for publication in Synthese."
Research by @ViliusDranseika finds the reason why different people give different responses to the Ship of Theseus puzzle (is an object the same after all of its original components were replaced?) is that everyone holds both conflicting intuitions: buff.ly/3xTpIQz
My son is in the musical Cinderella and I’m not a fan of the song “Impossible,” with lyrics like “impossible things are happening every day.” If they’re happening every day they must be improbable, not impossible. Sounds like a child wrote that lyric…
