If we examine our mind carefully while we are experiencing painful emotions, we will discover that these feelings are invariably mixed with self-grasping. In particular, it is our grasping at an inherently existent I and mine that makes us suffer.

Wherever we are born in samsara, even in the highest god realm, there is no freedom from suffering. Certainly the human realm is not free from suffering. We have only to look around us, read a newspaper, or watch television to see that human beings experience terrible sufferings.

If we do not prepare for protection from lower rebirth now, while we have a human life with its freedoms and endowments, once we have taken any of the three lower rebirths it will be extremely difficult to obtain a precious human life again.
