People like to finger-point at China & India over their emissions but they in fact have long-terms plans to build clean energy. Meanwhile in much of the West we are only just realising the importance of energy security & the value of nuclear energy.
Most of the human-emitted C02 in the atmosphere was emitted over the last 50 years by countries that are now wealthy/offer a high quality of life. E.g. Canada’s per capita C02 emissions are still twice as high as China’s and 8 times as high as India’s.
As a reader of @NatGeo I was disappointed to read this article about India’s energy plans, which heavily covers solar power but doesn’t mention India’s nuclear energy ambitions once. Stop this bias reporting please. nationalgeographic.co.uk/environment-an…
@ziontree these numbers would be more instructive when normalized to population
@ziontree I mean... the US already has the most nuclear power plants of any country. I think we need more, but we're still pretty accepting of it. I just wish the American media was more accepting of nuclear power.
@ziontree I don’t trust you. Nuclear is extremely expensive and the consequences of potential accidents present an unacceptable level of risk, and that’s without getting into the problem of how to handle the waste, etc
@ziontree They are the engine room of Western economies. They make stuff we consume, but per capita, their carbon footprint is nothing like ours.
@ziontree Ukraine also has 2 that will be built as soon as the war ends.
@ziontree @EngineerLondon And here we are (The Netherlands) debating if we maybe need to open one more. You know, to replace the one that has been in operation for almost 50 years providing clean power… Dutch politicians are just the worst…
@ziontree @Molson_Hart Bribery is legal in the US and politicians need bribes to get elected. Corporations run the US and they want profits. Unless it’s related to profit corps don’t care, so US doesn’t care and politicians get re-elected. Zero long term planning for the peope.
@ziontree Cool infographic. Question is, how many should they be building to get to zero carbon?
@ziontree west been hooked on ruzzian "cheap" gas, time to end this nonsense
@ziontree Assuming you believe Chinese claims, which is daft.
@ziontree France has enough nuclear reactors to supply 70% of their electricity but currently nuclear is only supplying 30%. France is importing renewable electricity from Germany to keep their lights on. Nuclear is unreliable.
@ziontree There have been no new nuclear reactors opened in the USA and Europe in the last 30 years.
@ziontree @Leigh_Phillips 🇳🇱 Netherlands are building/planning to build I think.
@ziontree China Energy Transformation Outlook 2021 | Summary Report
@ziontree It Is a terrible tragedy that my country Australia with no fault lines and the largest uranium reserves in the world. Is hell bent on making nuclear a political issue and the party with majority power is ideologically opposed to it. We invest in pipe dream green hydrogen instead
@ziontree If nuclear energy is to play a significant role then we must use fast breeder reactors, otherwise we'll run out of U-235 quite fast. Today only Russia is generating significant amounts of electricity using fast breeder reactors: youtube.com/watch?v=46awW9…
