Cultural iatrogenesis, we could call it. Psychiatry has had a corrosive, depoliticizing effect on the epistemic coordinates by which US society processes sadness, anxiety, suicide, health, etc. We have effectively manufactured many of the psychiatric patients we now “treat.”
