False fall is about to be PAUSED. Beginning around the middle of this upcoming week, temperatures return to the upper 70s and low 80s, pushing us back to normal, late summer conditions. Who's excited for summers return?
I’ve chased tornadoes for over 25 years. And in that time, only one has ever chased me.
It was, of course, the El Reno, OK tornado of 5/31/13.
It was 2.6 miles at its widest, had winds >300 mph, and moved faster than 50 mph.
Here's my story, and 5 things I learned:🧵

A full-halo CME was observed 30 Aug. It is expected to arrive at Earth late afternoon of 1 Sep EDT and continue into early morning of 2 Sep. Confidence of Earth arrival is high, timing and intensity certainty is fair - with a chance for G4. Visit spaceweather.gov for more
1/8 Today marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina. I was relatively new to @weatherchannel at the time. It was my 2nd hurricane season with the network. I wanted to share with you a few of the literally hundreds of photos I have from the Mississippi Coast...
This is the scariest weather alert ever issued in the United States.
20 years ago today, at 10:11 a.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2005, the National Weather Service in New Orleans, Louisiana released the infamous "doomsday statement." It was a first-of-its-kind warning, and is…
The most violent tornadoes can produce winds in excess of 300 mph.
What's wild, is that theoretically, these winds can be even stronger.
Here's the atmospheric process that makes this possible: 1/12
August 25, 2017:
Hurricane Harvey made landfall at 10 PM near Rockport, Texas. It was the strongest hurricane to strike America since Wilma in 2005. The Category 4 left behind a record $125 billion in damage (tied Katrina) and killed 106 people in the United States.

August 24, 2007:
A small but potent outbreak of six tornadoes struck Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Two tornadoes were significant (EF2+), the strongest of which produced EF3 damage in Benton Township. Later, a high-end EF2 tore through Fenton. Six people were injured.

August 24, 2023:
An outbreak of over two dozen tornadoes struck the Great Lakes region. Four twisters were significant EF2s, the most notable of which ripped across I-96 near Webberville, Michigan. The tornado killed two motorists and injured several others.

I am not gonna lie, this is a pretty heavily annotated map, but this points out the future of #99L. #Fernand will escape with no issues aside from surf for #Bermuda. We may at most see a minor intensification thru C Caribbean before things get dicey in the western basin. #Tropics
Some incredible aerial shots from South Dakota today showing the photogenic tornado’s unusual, meandering path! A fairly strong tornado with noticeable crop and tree damage, likely consistent with around EF1-EF2 intensity. Photos courtesy of Eric Klindt on Facebook.
8/20 11am EDT: Storm surge flooding, accompanied by significant wave impacts, is possible from Hurricane #Erin along the Outer Banks of North Carolina beginning later today, where a Storm Surge Warning is in effect.

I am seeing quite a few lightning flashes in Southeastern Montcalm County. The nearest storms are probably 50+ miles away. The only explanation I can think of is the light traveling on the underside of the stratus deck currently over the region.
In case you're wondering what EXTREME rapid intensification looks like (55 mph/13 hours), behold.
Erin is a maelstrom of meteorological mayhem as it puts on a pageant of power and elegance.
It has rapidly intensified at three time the rate needed to qualify.
