Nobody can name a single academic metric that has improved since the inception of the Department of Education in 1980. Yet the Dep of Ed continues to spend 100 Billion per year. Get rid of it.

Nothing tethering us to granny and grandpa, who were probably part of the Greatest Generation. No acknowledgment of "by Thy great help I've come." No impression of a legacy that we ought to feel responsible to carry on. It is an utter tragedy.

No real care for a funeral and a body also reveals how modernity has seeped into even our most sacred traditions. No funeral...no eulogy...no remark on the impact the person had on the world, no matter how seemingly small, tells the world "We don't care about a past or a future."

It doesn't remind us of the most important thing, which is, we have to die. Seeing our loved ones there, not breathing, their spirit totally absent from the body, reminds us that we, too, will leave this mortal world and live forever, elsewhere.

I think the major point is this: The devaluing of funerals and the frequent decision to burn the body by (unnecessary) fire reveals something about the degradation of society. It's nihilistic in a way. No funeral and no body present at a funeral reminds us of...nothing.

I'm still mulling over that idea. But, when I heard these two men from Georgia noting that Catholic theology of the body has influence even on rural Appalachia, it gave me pause. Maybe Morse has a point. But that's a thread for another time. Back to the story.

Let me back up for a second. This probably wouldn't have struck me as too interesting if I hadn't just listened to Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse on Helen Roy's podcast the other day, and Dr. Morse remarked that if the Catholic Church fell, no other denomination would stand a chance.

Now, what makes this interesting is that it's coming from two country Baptist boys, and they're (unknowingly) giving authority to Rome on matters concerning the body after death. I don't have a problem with this. But it did inspire some deeper thinking on my part.

He said, "Funerals have been so devalued. Everybody's cremating these days. Makes my job harder. Nobody wants a body out. Nobody cares about funerals." His former boss, Billy, chimed in, "Ever since the Catholics said it was okay to cremate people, everybody else did, too."
