NEW: After lots of internal deliberations about fourplexes (four units as-of-right) province wide - Premier Doug Ford shuts down the effort. Ford says that’s “off the table for us” largely because there would be push back from residents. #onpoli
The Ford government has often railed against NIMBYism. But the Premier seems to siding with NIMBYs; “You go in the middle of communities and start putting up four storey, six storey, eight storey buildings … there’s going to be a lot of shouting and screaming.” #onpoli
Ford says his government’s focus is on single-dwelling homes and town homes.
@ColinDMello Ford has his ear to the people. The 4 plex idea is great but it needs more nuance. Some like low density neighborhoods and some like high. No one wants some mishmash middle ground.
@ColinDMello Thank you @JustinTrudeau @SeanFraserMP,love that you deal directly with mayors/orgs & not con premiers who put up roadblocks & do SFA for their constituents, especially Doug!Still waiting to hear what con premiers did with $25B PMJT transferred for Covid/healthcare?Rent controls?
@ColinDMello Many existing lots in older neighborhoods are deep. Blocks used to be wider—with big front & back yards—not current skinny rectangles with puny backyards. (pics 1-2) Older lots are ideal for TWO-storey fourplexes or apartment bldgs, like my 1st Buffalo apt with 24 units, pic 3-4
@ColinDMello @PierrePoilievre and @ScottAAitchison care to comment on this instead of wasting your breath on BC?!?!?!
@ColinDMello The shouting would be the result of 4plexes being jammed onto single lots in established neighbourhoods with streets and infrastucture not designed to handle the increased traffic/parking, and no right of appeal of zoning changes for existing residents.
@ColinDMello I think it is less about NIMBYism...and more about planning thoughtful communities. Without intentional planning...we will face lots of unintended consequences. Let's build mixed use communities residents can be proud of...There is more to this than just building units...
