Sitting in cash is a terrible position over the long run due to the constant threat of inflation. 30 years from now, a dollar will buy far less than it does today, resulting in a loss in purchasing power. Keep what you need for an emergency in cash and invest the rest.
The VIX spiked above 60 today. The chart highlights all initial breaches of 40. In the year after such moves, the S&P 500 has had a median return of 25.1% and an average of 22.5%, with three misses: 9/11, pre-Lehman and in the 8 months since the August 2024 scare.
