I'm trying to imagine this discussion around card games, like Oh Hell. Good luck finding official rules, because there's a thousand different variants, and what you play may be unique. But RPGs have rulebooks, and so we can read a common source for those rules.

Initiative is easy: each side rolls a d6 and the higher roll "has the initiative." It's the rest of combat that gets complicated, especially since nearly every other rpg has each player take their "turn", but AD&D doesn't.
