If only the Education Secretary were interested. 🙄 Just because the reforms were initiated by the Tories does not mean Labour has to undo what works. A sensible politician would just continue the good work.

‘Pretends to retire’ - love it! If you are able to wipe out of your head everything that is ingrained as ‘basic understanding’ of education (maths education in particular) then it’s easy to agree with Mark on everything he says….. @EmathsUK

So many kids have dropped of the maths bus.

Having had many PGCE student teachers from Northern Ireland from 2018 - 2000 , I can say they had something ‘different’, even on initial teaching practices. With pupils they are kind yet have clear boundaries. They are ready to ask questions and really listen, then discuss.

Today from the NCETM “Foulds and Thomas call for a curriculum that supports pupils to apply learning fluently before moving on. The NCETM, Maths Hubs and the thousands of teachers …….. support this call for change.” ncetm.org.uk/features/align…

And I think I finally know how to retreive the missing piece of treasure for the lowest 20% to retain instant recall of times tables and addition facts to 20. Thank you…. @PeterFoulds77 @BrunoReddyMaths @brian_poncy @rastokke @chr1sCarlisle @sharemath

The most frustrating thing is that so many people in Maths Education in the UK don’t see ‘knowing facts’ as important. I believe understanding needs to be secured first but then a quick push to ‘knowing facts’ - otherwise youngsters become ‘hard-wired’ to ‘counting on’.

Helen, do you think addition facts to 20 ever need to be learnt to fluency? I do. I’m not certain of the optimal age - but I’m certain that inability to do this adds to cognitive load unnecessarily. @BrunoReddyMaths @PeterFoulds77 @EmathsUK

Agree - but conversely, you wouldn’t leave some foundation bricks of instant recall of addition facts to 20 to put in at the end after you’ve put on the roof, because you’ve run out of time - would you? @BrunoReddyMaths @helenjwc @PeterFoulds77
