‘Viz.’, meaning ‘that is to say’, is an abbreviation of the Latin term VIDELICET. The reason it ends in a Z, while the original word does not, is that the Z is not really a Z at all, but a Latin shorthand symbol or siglum, Ꝫ , once used to represent the pair of letters ‘et’.

Word of the Day: COSMODELYTE (n.) someone worried about the state of the world
Suddenly I understand why the Dutch word for 'tree' is 'boom'...
A BEAM was originally a tree, before the meaning shifted in Old English to refer to a piece of timber from a tree rather than the tree itself. The original meaning still survives in the names of several different kinds of tree, however, like QUICKBEAM, WHITEBEAM, and HORNBEAM.
Did not know that. 🪵
Etymologically, the ‘log’ in LOGIN is an actual log. In the sense of entering into a system, the verb ‘log’ comes from LOGBOOK. A logbook in turn was originally a ship’s record, and was so named because the ship’s speed was measured by throwing a roped log into the water.

primordial clam chowder🤣
In 2002, astronomers at Johns Hopkins University found that the average colour of the universe—combining light from 200,000 galaxies—was pale beige. They called the colour COSMIC LATTE—though other suggestions for its name included SKYVORY, UNIVEIGE, and PRIMORDIAL CLAM CHOWDER.
Red sky in the morning - pissing down later.
An ANTELUMINARY is a light that precedes the emergence of another—like the gradual brightening of the sky at dawn before the sun itself actually appears.

Adopted into English from French, the word FAULT was originally spelled and pronounced “faut”, until an L was added in the 1500s to make it better match its Latin root, ‘falsus.’ But the L remained silent for 200 years, until the modern pronunciation emerged in the 18th century.
Look, I’ve made myself a beautiful home here over the last 14 years and just because the current landlord is a white supremacist I’m not giving it up to him. I’m holding out for a better landlord… eventually.
Bring back all of these; and hog-babe especially as a term of endearment
As a word for a young pig, the word PIGLET only dates back to the mid 1800s. Before then, a young pig might be called a HOGLING (14thC), a PORKET (1550s), a HOG-BABE (1600s), or a GRUNTLING (1680s).
Puts a new light on my early stroll.
To STROLL originally meant not just to wander, but to wander without any permanent home to return to. In that sense, one theory is that it derives from ‘Strolch’, a German word for a vagabond—which in turn might come from an even earlier word for an itinerant fortuneteller.
